Dublin’s only Traditional Music Folk Club, the Button Factory County Sessions is delighted to be celebrating the music traditions of County Cork, which will be hosted by one of it’s most respected songwriters and performers John Spillane.

John is a native of Cork, the County he lovingly describes as “the centre of the universe”, and it has been a huge creative influence on him. Two-time Meteor award winner, John is one of the most accomplished songwriters in Ireland today. Among those who have covered his songs are Christy Moore, Karan Casey, Pauline Scanlon. When given an opportunity to celebrate the musical tradition of his native county there was no hesitation.

Along with him on the night features one of Ireland’s most influential flute players Conal Ó Gráda from the Gaeltacht of Múscraí Cúil Áodha - situated in North Cork. Conal has long been at the forefront of traditional Irish flute-playing and truly has one of its most distinctive sounds. A multiple All-Ireland winner in his youth, Conal’s debut recording ‘The Top of Coom’ in 1990 is still regarded as a seminal recording of flute-playing.

Colm Murphy, is a former member of Dé Dannan. His understated approach to the bodhrán belies his prowess on the instrument. The beauty of his playing becomes more and more evident with his very unique style of playing. He has recorded with Beginish, Jackie Daly and Conal o Gráda.

Johnny McCarthy, a native of Cork city is a founder member of the Four Star Trio and recently featured in TG4’s ‘Faoi Lán Cheoil’ as John Creedon’s flute tutor. An accomplished singer both in Irish and English, Johnny is a fine example of one whose ability portray’s the beauty of the singing tradition of Gaeltacht Mhúscraí.

Gearóid Ó Duinnín also hails from Cúil-Áodha. From the age of eight Gearóid has sung with the prestigious Cór Chúil-Áodha, which was founded by the late Seán Ó Ríada. He started playing the electric guitar when he was nine, and a few years later was introduced to the acoustic by Corks main Troubadour John Spillane. Gearóid was also fortunate to be given a one on one master class with guitar legend Rory Gallagher.

While studying music in Cork, his love of traditional music was awakened. For the last twenty years he has played with some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians including flautist Conal Ó Gráda and fiddle master Paddy Cronin.

John will be helping The Clonakilty Guitar festival attempt to break a record on the 19th of September along to the wonderful tune of ‘Óro sé do bheatha bhaile’. And you can help him!!!
